I Didn't Even Know I Had Any Cheese !

This week's commentary is a
simple one. A friend of mine has just made me familiar with the
book that you see pictured here. I truly believe that many in the
fire service should read this simple and humorous book. The basic
premise is about two mice, and two small people who navigate a
maze to find cheese. Things get switched around a bit and the
cheese is moved. Some of the characters cannot cope with this
change and have great difficulty.
Others have prepared themselves
and are readily able to compensate and cope with the changes that
come their way.
This relates to the fire service in many ways. Officers are not
able to cope with the way "things used to be". New
recruit firefighters have yet again an entirely different view
and in many ways they don't change.
If we think about the last five
years in the fire service in general, these have been very
dramatic changing times. Thermal imaging, risk assessment, rapid
intervention, 2 in and 2 out as well as many other dramatic
impacts have left many firefighters and fire officers ill
equipped for change.
The book is simple to read (
about 30 minutes) (...and yes it even has pictures) and does not
cost very much.
Buy a copy, and leave it on the
firehouse kitchen table. In a short time you will hear people
being referred to as the characters in the story.
