The
"Training Effect"
Think about the last trainings that you have
conducted or attended in your department.
Are they having any effect? Sure, everyone was there, and
everyone enjoyed the session, maybe even some of them thought it
was "fun".
But, will they use the training you just gave them on their next
emergency or will that just be more of the book stuff that really
doesn't work out here in the street.
Is all of the current safety and survival training making any one
of us really safer?
There is currently a lot of debate about this, both pro and con.
Over the course of the next couple of commentaries I would like
to hear from those of you that wish to be included.
In order to become more safe, we need to look at a number of
issues.
Much training and debate is being done right now focussing on how
to reduce the 100 firefighter deaths each year.
I am certainly a proponent of that, but what about the 90,000
injuries?
How many of those injuries are near miss fatalities and doesn't
that say something about the way we operate?
The messages are pretty simple:
If you are the training officer in your department, and you
really don't believe the safety message you are giving, then the
men probably won't either.
Till next week....
Stay safe!
