Ground Ladders

This week we will have a discussion on ground ladders and some ideas and thoughts for training.

For the classroom portion of the training review all of the ground ladders your department has, how they are stored, and the basic parts and terminology so that everyone knows what they are talking about.

You might also want to review using commands and more importantly "preparatory commands" for use in raising and handling ladders.

"Prepare to raise ladder" - "Raise Ladder" and so forth so that all members react to a preparatory command and everyone is in synch when the actual move is done. This ensures smoothness and can prevent injuries.

Review the common carries that could and should be used by your department. Not all "drillground" carries are used in every department so train on what is common.

When you go out into the field be sure that you have all students be aware and actually perform these tasks:

* Before raising look for overhead obstructions.

* Stay away from electrical hazards.

* When climbing be sure the pawls are locked in and verbalize that to other climbers.

* Ensure the halyard is properly tied off.

* Check and make sure the ladder is at the proper climbing angle of 75 degrees.

* Place the ladder so that it will not obstruct any exit from the building.

* Insure the ladder is placed at the directed or designated position, either for firefighting or entry. ( This is currently be debated in the fire service today. It is my personal belief that most ladder placement should be at or just below the sill at all times. Use whatever your department policy dictates)

* Be sure the ladder is under control at all times while raising and being lowered into the building.

* Be sure that firefighters maintain a safe and proper hand and foot position during the raise.

* If a roof ladder is used be sure hooks are locked and set properly.

You probably don't use ground ladders that often so good solid repetitive practice is necessary to hone your skills. That is why we chose to repeat this important topic.
