More Random Thoughts

Once again, my colleague and friend Paul Anderson (Deputy Chief ret. Randolph Fire Department) sent me some other quotes and few comments about leadership.

The quotes come from a book called the "Greatest Management Principle in the World"
by Michael LeBoeuf
The things that get rewarded get done.
The greatest single obstacle to the success of today's organizations is the giant mismatch between the behaviors we need and the behaviors we reward.

Reward smart work instead of busy work.
If you can't get your work done in an eight hour work day either you have too much work assigned or you are incompetent.

Reward loyalty instead of turnover.
You get loyalty and commitment from people by giving it to them. Promoting insiders to good jobs sends a loud and clear message to everyone that loyalty is rewarded. Hiring outsiders for choice positions says just the opposite.

Employees who become owners behave like owners.

People do what gets measured.
This makes it imperative that every major goal have a scoring system that reflects the results that you are trying to get. Just as every golf course has a par value, every major goal should have a measurable standard for excellence.

You aren't managing people, you're leading them.
Once you set up a positive reward system for achieving the right goals, people quickly become their own best managers.
