The Recount

I would be very remiss if this week's commentary did not have something to do with a recount.

What an interesting word....It means to count again, something already counted. It can be used as to recount a story to someone else.

I wonder if sometimes we in the fire service should conduct a recount of our leaders and senior officials. There is much discussion around firehouse kitchen tables about these things.

About how Chief so and so, should have never been promoted, or scored so high on an exam, because he knows how to take a test.

The point of this particular commentary is not about that however, it is about how fellow members years from now will recount tales about you. What will you be remembered for on the job.

The guy that always moaned and groaned.....The guy that was always found near the front door of the fire building.... or as the happy go lucky, positive natured, good firefighter who always did his job.

Next time, you are sitting around the firehouse table, about to verbally bash someone else, think to the future about some guys 15 years from today talking about your performance.

Remember,...in order to get a recount, you have to stand up and be counted each day of your career....no exceptions !

E-Mail me and tell me what your thoughts are...

Till next week
