SCBA Drill

[HRule Image]

This drill is sort of a natural tie to this weeks commentary.

All particpants must have had adequate and preliminary experience with SCBA in their department.

Using a proper safety ratio of 1 instructor to every 4 students (or more) fill an area with Roscoe smoke. (This could also be done with live smoke as well, but obviously circumstances dictate what you can do)

Sit students or have them kneel or crouch in an area filled with smoke.

Sound a remote PASS device to create an noise anxiety level.

Their responsibility is to use their personal flashlights and monitor their partner's breathing condition as well as their own air supply.

They should routinely check their own air guage.

They should check their assigned partner's air guage with a flashlight.

They should check their partner's face through the mask for signs of anxiety, trouble breathing, distress etc.

The drill should be timed by instructors.

Students should be allowed to leave 1 minute after thei low air warning sounds. You should let them stay for one minute just to have them monitored by their partner while the low air alarm is sounding.

Instructors should escort all members out for safety.

Air consumption psi and time should be monitored and recorded for each participant.

REHAB and medical monitoring should occur for all students as well as rehydration.

Instructors should routinely be asking members what their air guage pressure is at verying times during the drill.

This type of drill places emphasis on breathing control, and routinely monitoring your own air supply. It also gives you an approximate resting time of SCBA use that the member can use as a baseline for his / her own operating time at a fire.
