The Training Officer

A couple of weeks ago I talked about how important it was to get out and network.

This week the training bulletin is not for the troops but for us the folks that are doing the training.

I am encouraging you to join whatever professional training organizations you can possibly join that will help you become better trainers.

First and foremost join your state organization that exists for fire instructors and trainers.

If there is not a statewide organization, call your neighboring departments and set up a once a month meeting with them to share ideas, training drills and simple little thought provoking ideas like we do here on the website.

Consider joining the ISFSI.

International Society of Fire Service Instructors

I have provided a link on their logo below to get to their website and I encourage you strongly to get there.

I was a member for many many years, and then I let my mebership lapse, and I have since re-joined and more than glad that I did.

There are many membership benefits including monthly Instructogram lesson plans, the voice magazine, and others, but the most important benefit I see is the willingness to share information, and the attention and listening to the "little guy" the guy with limited resources who is trying to get his department the best info they can get.

The open network of folks allows you as a trainer to grow and become the very best you can be.

I don't get money for promoting ISFSI, (most of the folks involved get no money!) I tell you this because I believe it is an organization, rebounding from some difficult times, and it shows me some of the greatest promise for the future of fire service training.
